So, here I was, wondering about characterisation issues (while supposed to be doing Ancient Greek homework), and it occurred to me that I was automatically using the British class system to give me ideas on their living habits.
Intrigued by the notion of how class could be used to interpret the characters/plot of the various divisions of the YGO franchise, (well, Duel Monsters and GX, anyway- I have yet to immerse myself in the world of duels which are played on motorcycles), and in the full understanding that all I know about the Japanese class system could be written without too much difficulty on the back of a postage stamp (I know about the Burakumin and that's about it), I created these lists:( Collapse )
Bed now. Have stopped thinking in full sentences. TGIF.
Tomorrow: GX and brief summary of 5DS, or what the author understands of it.
*Goes to bed, anticipating comments in the morning*.
EDIT: I LIED, I'M NOT GOING TO BED. I SWEAR I'M NOT SLEEPY. AM NOT
Some updates on the Kaibas and on Sugoroku Mutou.
Kaibas: It seems that Gozaburo was indeed nouveau riche, which makes them new money by default, and thus upper-middle, though they might be said to be 'living the upper-class lifestyle', and they do seem regarded as awfully
posh by most people in the series (their money gets them into upper-class events, but of course the real old-blood purists will still look down on them for being 'new'). This was my original problem: I could not find out whether Gozaburo was new or old money. Thank you, kind commenter!
In regards to Sugoroku Mutou: Just go and read the first comment in the fourth thread. It's got some very, very plausible theories on him being a 'gentleman explorer' using gambling money, born into a high class. It's awsome, go and read it.
